1. The awards shall be known as the University of Waikato Masters Research Scholarships.2. To be eligible for the award, the candidate must have qualified for a first degree and be enrolled full-timefor a first Masters degree at the University of Waikato in the year of tenure.3. Should an applicant’s enrolment not fall within a single calendar year, the applicant is expected to applyfor the Scholarship for the round preceding the period in which the majority of study is to take place.4. Scholarships are awarded on academic merit with a minimum grade of A- expected for eligibility. Averagegrade calculations will be based on the equivalent of the applicant’s last two years of full-time study.5. The candidate will normally be undertaking research (i.e. enrolled in the thesis year of their mastersdegree) and will usually be in their final year of study for the degree in the year of tenure; in some casesthis may be the only year of study for the degree.6. Candidates for the Scholarship must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents.7. The tenure of the award is one year.8. The Scholarship will have the value of $12,000, of which $3,500 is to be applied to tuition fees for themasters degree. The remaining $8,500 will be paid out in two instalments of $4,250, the first after threemonths of study (or as soon as possible after the awarding of the Scholarship, should the recipient havealready completed more than three months of study) and the second after seven months of study.9. Recipients of this award must enrol in an approved programme of study within six months of acceptingthe Scholarship.10. The Scholarship may be held together with any other bursary, prize, or student allowance unless theregulations of the other funding preclude this. Should a student also hold another fees scholarship, theUniversity of Waikato Masters Research Scholarship will pay the balance of any fees (up to $3,500);however, the student will forgo the balance of the $3,500 not credited to their fees. The Scholarship maybe held together with any contract funding administered through the University’s UNILink Office of avalue up to, but not exceeding, the annual value of the University of Waikato Masters ResearchScholarship.11. If, during the tenure of the Scholarship, a recipient’s circumstances change in such a manner that theircontinued eligibility for the Scholarship may be affected, they must inform the Scholarships Committee(via the Scholarships Office) immediately.12. The selection of scholars will be made by the Scholarships Committee of the University of Waikato, onthe basis of the written applications. All candidates will be advised in writing of the result of theirapplication.13. Up to sixty awards will be made for the 2009 academic year.14. The closing date for applications will be 31 October and 30 April annually.
