Ph.D. in Biotechnology Indraprastha University Delhi

Opportunities available for
Ph.D. in Biotechnology
Only for NET-JRF holders

School of Biotechnology
GURU GOBIND SINGH INDRAPRASTHA UNIVERSITY
Kashmere Gate, Delhi - 110 403

Apply by 15 Aug. 2008; Interview on 21st Aug 2008

The School of Biotechnology, GGSIPU, established in 1999, is rated among the top 10 schools in India for the last several years. Its multicrore infrastructure, interdisciplinary faculty and flexible admission provide excellent research opportunities. Vacancies are currently available in the Molecular Biology and Functional Genomics Lab, established by the undersigned in the last 5 years with research grants from CSIR, DST and UGC.

The main research interests of this lab revolve around signal transduction, gene expression and metabolic regulation in plants and microbes, using rice, Arabidopsis and Spirulina as experimental systems. One specific theme is to characterize the molecular basis of nitrate responsive gene expression and nitrogen use efficiency in rice, using a combination of biochemical, molecular biological, pharmacological, genomic and bioinformatic approaches.

Another theme is the high-throughput screening for G-protein regulated genes and signalling
pathways in plants using microarrays and real time PCR. The lab has also established Spirulina as a microbial model system to study its nitrate-assimilation, N use efficiency and protein content. For more details & publications, visit: http://www.ipu.ac.in/usbt/btraghu.htm

The incumbent should be a 1st class M.Sc./M.Tech holder (<24 yrs) in any field of relevance with strong training/experience in biochemistry/molecular biology/genomics/bioinformatics, with a UGC-CSIR NET JRF or equivalent source of independent fellowship valid for at least 4 years from the date of joining. Other requirements include strong aptitude for research, excellent communication skills in English, interdisciplinary outlook and ability to master new
skills and work at IPU or elsewhere if required. Hostel accommodation is possible, subject to availability. The registration for Ph.D. is subject to the submission of a detailed proposal by selected candidates and its evaluation through a seminar by the School Research Committee (SRC), which meets once in every few months. Publication of at least 2 research papers in international journals as well as fulfilling the proposed plan of work and its evaluation through a pre-submission seminar by the SRC is mandatory for submission of the thesis. It takes about 5 years of full time dedicated work to fulfil all these criteria and earn the Ph.D.

Interested candidates may send their applications and CV on
plain paper or email(mentioning the period for which their fellowship is valid) to the undersigned by 15 Aug2008, and be prepared to attend an interview on 21st Aug. 2008 at 10:30 am in the office
of the School of Biotechnology at their own expense and stay an extra day if required.
Those who are not required to attend the interview will be informed by email.
